Performance/Product based Assessment

There’s been a lot of confusion regarding the construction of the Performance – Oriented Assessment and the Product Based Assessment. Confusion starts with the lack of understanding with regards to the definition and application of these two authentic assessments.

When we say Performance Oriented Assessment, we refer to the type of assessment that mainly focuses on the ability of the students/learners to arrive or produce or demonstrate their own learning.

So, this means that if the learning task is to “write a poem” or “write a book review” or solve a mathematical problem or come up with a basic building plan, the teacher will focus on how the learner produced or conducted the learning task.

The teacher will assess the student/learner based on the skill acquired, so in the case of writing a poem, the criterion would be “displayed skillful ability to compose an original poem” and “displayed ability to rhyme the words“.

In these assessment, you are focusing on the skills of the learner in coming up with a Poem.

While in the Product-Oriented Assessment, you are focusing on the  product your learner was able to come up with. In this case, ” Writing a Poem” , so your criterion would be ” organization of the poem” , ” poem contain 3 stanza” , ” correct grammar ” , ” appropriate use of words and rhymes “, “contains 150 words”.

As you  might have observed, we are focusing on the poem itself and not on the learner. This is what product oriented assessment is all about.

Now, the way to assess this is through a RUBRIC.

And lastly, a single learning task can be assessed with both product – oriented and Process – oriented . I suggest you use the learning task you are using for your Process Oriented Assessment for you Product – Oriented Assessment, in this case, you will be able to construct your own assessment easily and better appreciate Both type of Assessments. Same learning tasks can also be used for your Affective Assessment.

    may inquiry now is how to do it in a multigrade classroom, where there are at least 5 grade levels in a room. please give me an idea.

      Hi Mandy,
      It doesn’t really matter on how many students you have in the classroom, what grade/ level they are in or as you said a single classroom containing different grade/levels of students. While i don’t understand why would you put students from grade, say grade 1 – 5 in a single room.

      If let’s say, you required them to do different things per level, then you have to assess them based on the specific activities you gave in each grade/level. You need to have 5 different rubrics for each grade.

      But if you gave them a single task, then it would be very easy for you, because you will be using a single Rubric of Assessment for that task. It now depends on you if you want it to be Product Oriented or Process Oriented one. Its up to you as a teacher.

      But i suggest, you use different Rubrics of Assessment for each level even though they are in the same classroom. The reason for this is that, you can’t expect a grade 1 pupil to perform at the level of the grade 4 or 5.

      You can assess them, let’s say for grade 1 to 3, you will use performance based, because you want to see them following the skills you taught them, and then for the grade 4-5 you can assess them using product-oriented assessment because this students are better learned based on their experiences from grade 1-3, to demonstrate their skills and come up with a good product or output.

      The process/product assessments are actually very flexible, you can use them Both if you want or you may choose just one.

    Hi Naline,

    As far as i am concern i think the explanation is already elaborate, however if you still find it lacking, i’ll try my best to explain it to you.

    here’s an example:

    Performance Based Assessment

    Learning Task : writing a poem

    Assessment: You assess the work of the students based on the outcome of the poem. Your criterion of assessment would be :

    1. poem contains at least 500 words.
    2. the grammar in the poem is correct.
    3. each end of the stanza is rhymed with the previous stanza.

    This is just a sample of your assessment, as you can see i am evaluating what is written on the poem, i am not interested if the student did it with great effort or if he displayed good attitude in the course of writing the poem. what i am interested in is the poem itself, the words written in it and its content.

    So, that would be your product based assessment. Whatever topic or subject or activity your learning task might be, still you can assess that based on the outcome (product) of the students.

    Btw, i suggest you use the task in your performance based assessment for your product based assessment. it is much better if you will do that, for one it will reduce your work load in doing and planning for your objective and goal because you can copy from your process based assessment. the only difference will only be in your rubrics of assessment.

    reminder : a single task can be evaluated in both assessment at the same time, but they have different rubrics of assessment.
